Understanding The Power And Purpose Of Christ’s Heavenly Departure
The Ascension of Jesus is a powerful and often overlooked moment in the life of Christ—a divine bridge between his earthly ministry and his heavenly reign. Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven, returning to the Father in glory. But what does the Ascension really mean for us today? And why is it such a pivotal part of our faith?
What Is The Ascension Of Jesus?
The Ascension refers to the moment when Jesus Christ physically rose into heaven in the presence of his disciples. This event is recorded in Acts 1:9-11:
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
“After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.” (Acts 1:8-9, NIV)
This was not merely a farewell—it was the culmination of Jesus’ earthly mission and the beginning of his heavenly ministry.
The Meaning Behind The Ascension
1. Jesus’ Mission Was Complete
By returning to the Father, Jesus confirmed that his work of redemption was finished. He conquered sin, death, and the grave. The Ascension marks the fulfillment of father God’s plan for salvation through Christ.
2. Jesus Was Exalted
The Ascension was also an exaltation. As Philippians 2:9 declares, father “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.” Jesus didn’t just go back to heaven—he was enthroned as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
3. The Holy Spirit Was Promised
Before His ascension, Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would come to empower them (Acts 1:8). The Ascension was necessary so the comforter could come and dwell within believers, equipping them for the mission ahead.
Why The Ascension Still Matters Today
A. Jesus Intercedes For Us
Right now, Jesus is at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us (Romans 8:34). He is our advocate, praying on our behalf and guiding us with love and grace.
B. It Gives Us Hope
The angels who witnessed the Ascension said something powerful to the disciples:
“This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)
This promise fuels our hope. Jesus is coming back. The Ascension isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of the next chapter in father God’s story.
C. It Empowers Our Mission
Because of the Ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are called to go and make disciples of all nations. We don’t walk in our own strength—we walk with divine power and purpose.
Living In The Light Of The Ascension
The Ascension challenges us to shift our eyes upward. It reminds us that Jesus is not just a figure of the past, but the living, reigning Savior who is actively involved in our lives today. It’s a call to live with eternal perspective, bold faith, and joyful expectation.
So what does the Ascension mean to you? It means that Jesus is alive, his mission continues through us, and the best is yet to come.
